Nominations are open!

Dear Parents/Guardians and Middle School Students,

The Robert Goddard Montessori School PTSA has immediate and forthcoming Officer vacancies. We have vacancies in the President and Treasurer positions (2 years term, 2020-2022), and would also like nominations for Middle School Student Officers (1 year term, 2020-2021).

We will vote for new President and Treasurer at the PTSA meeting in the month of May (Wednesday, May 20th at 7pm). The nomination form is available here. More details are available in the nominations packet.  We encourage anyone with any interest in helping our school and giving back to the community to nominate yourself for these positions. The general duties attending PTSA general membership meetings (every other month) and PTSA Board meetings (alternating months with Membership meetings), and volunteering for any other PTSA tasks that work in your schedule.

Nomination forms are due to Amy Feng (simcat@gmail.com), the Head of the Nomination Committee by May 17th, 2020, at the latest. But don’t wait! Nominate now! The only requirement is that the person is a paid PTSA member prior to voting (you can pay at the meeting if you are not currently a member).

The President duties include setting the agenda and running the PTSA general membership meetings (every other month) and PTSA Board meetings (alternating months), communicating with the Administration, as needed, and volunteering for any other tasks proposed by the PTSA board, i.e. helping with activities that work for your schedule.

The Treasurer duties are to collect and manage PTA fund, prepare financial report for the board meetings, balancing checkbook, keep detailed record, etc.

The Student Officers bring a new perspective to PTA/PTSA ideas and programs.

They will help students and adults obtain a better understanding and appreciation of one another by working side by side on goal-related projects. Student officers can practice effective positive communication skills, help create an atmosphere of mutual respect between students and adults in order to communicate the needs, desires and concerns of fellow students.

Why is it important to be part of the PTSA? We need a full board (President, Secretary and Treasurer) to operate. Without these positions filled, we will no longer be allowed to operate as a PTA, and the Maryland PTA board will take back all the hard-earned money in our bank account that we have raised for our school.

But can I really do this (“I have a demanding job, multiple children, numerous after school activities, other responsibilities in my community, elderly care, infants to care for, etc”)?  The answer is that “Yes, you can.” The PTSA runs as a committee.  We have other officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and now student officers) as well as numerous other board members (Advocacy chair, Communication chair, Membership chair, Fundraising Chair, Library Liaison, Teacher/Staff Liaisons, Administrators) that attend the Board Meetings.

You have many paid PTSA members that volunteer to support you in the role.  You are only required to attend to one evening activity each month (Membership or Board meeting, and the Board Meetings are often done via conference call).  That is just nine evening activities in an entire year.  There are many of us on the board that work outside the home, some with flexible schedules, others with 9-5 jobs in DC, and others that do not have jobs outside the home.  We work together as a team to help the school.  It is not on one person’s shoulders. We delegate, ask for volunteers, work with our Administration and Teachers to help each other on school initiatives.  We are a team that is here to enhance the wonderful school that is Robert Goddard Montessori.

Please step out and nominate yourself. Feel free to email me with any questions, and I will be happy to answer them or direct you to those who can discuss them with you.

Sincerely,

Amy Feng
